The icon of Virgin Mary of Kalomata, which was kept in a Byzantine monastery in Messenia, is said by legend to have even converted the Ottoman aga in whose stable it was discovered, thanks to the miracles he witnessed. The icon still exists and is kept inside the Church of the Presentation of Christ. The form of the Theotokos is pleasant and beautiful, with lovely (good) eyes, from which the nickname Kalomata is derived. As written in a manual of the monastery, the city of Kalamata in Messenia took its name from Kalomata, through the distortion of the word.
