According to Church Tradition, the parents of the Virgin Mary were the devout Joachim and Anna, who were descendants of King David. After fervent prayers, the childless couple, through a miraculous intervention of God, were blessed with a beloved daughter whom they named Mary—Mariam, which in Greek means “Strong” (psychologically strong), “Lady,” or “Mistress.”
